A DIKW Paradigm to Cognitive Engineering

چکیده

Though the word “cognitive” has a wide range of meanings we define cognitive engineering as learning from brain to bolster engineering solutions. However, giving an achievable framework to the process towards this has been a difficult task. In this work we take the classic data-information-knowledge-wisdom (DIKW) framework to set some achievable goals and sub-goals towards cognitive engineering. A layered framework like DIKW aligns nicely with the layered structure of prefrontal cortex. And breaking the task into sub-tasks based on the layers also makes it easier to start developmental endeavours towards achieving the final goal of a brain-inspired system. machine learning, cognitive architecture, bio-inspired, Big-Data

Software-Assisted Knowledge Generation in the Archaeological Domain: A Conceptual Framework

Knowledge generation processes are traditionally related to the DIKW (data-information-knowledge-wisdom) hierarchy, a layered model for the classification of human understanding. Software components can be situated in one or several of these layers, or assist in the interfaces between two of them. Most of the knowledge generation processes that occur in the archaeology field involve complex mec...

Ethics of autonomous information systems towards an artificial thinking

Projects, situated in the crossroads of the cognitive sciences, the neurosciences, the computing and robotics currently concern the creation of autonomous artificial beings capable of thinking. This article presents a model of comparison of the human thinking with a numerical thinking that relies on four hierarchies: the classification of information systems, the cognitive pyramid, the linguist...

نگاهی به پارادایم‌های سه‌گانه‌ی مدرن در اطلاع‌شناسی

The focal question in the field of informatology is the nature of information. Modern informatological theories can be grouped in three paradigms, i.e. mathematical-natural paradigm, semantic paradigm and cognitive paradigm. The difference between these paradigms depends on the factors of subjectivity and objectivity. Under the mathematical-natural paradigm, information is studied as a physical...

DIKIW: Data, Information, Knowledge, Intelligence, Wisdom and their Interrelationships

DIKW hierarchy is the model used for discussion of data, information, knowledge, wisdom and their interrelationships. However, definitions of data, information, and knowledge are entrapped in a logical fallacy known as circular definition. There are some agreements in the definitions without the fallacy. The missing ‘Intelligence’ in DIKW plays a major role between knowledge and wisdom. This gi...

The knowledge pyramid: a critique of the DIKW hierarchy

The paper evaluates the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom (DIKW) Hierarchy. This hierarchy is part of the canon of information science and management. The paper considers whether the hierarchy, also known as the ‘Knowledge Hierarchy’, is a useful and intellectually desirable construct to introduce, whether the views expressed about DIKW are true and have evidence in favour of them, and whether ...
